Near the instep of the “boot” that is Italy, you’ll find the small city of Matera. At first glance it’s not an impressive town – essentially the same as so many other towns and cities in this region of Italy. 
While the major cities of Italy might be situated in the northern part of the country, that is certainly no reason to avoid the amazing scenery and the opportunities present in the southern portion of the country. 
Near Abruzzo National Park is the newest of Italy’s scenic wildlife preserves and park. Majella National Park is truly beautiful and a wonderful destination when you’re seeking something outside of the museums and shops of the big cities.
